Summary

Percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) has rapidly evolved over the last 4 decades with increasing complexity of PCI cases undertaken safely. Robotic-assisted PCI (R-PCI) represents the next paradigm shift in contemporary PCI practice. This chapter outlines the current position and potential of robotic-assisted PCI.

Introduction

While there have been rapid advances in interventional cardiology in improving the safety and efficacy of the procedure for the patient, little has been invested in improving the safety of the procedure for the physician. A career’s worth of radiation exposure with years of prolonged standing while wearing heavy leaded garments leads to significant occupational hazard including orthopaedic injury 11.
